Preparation of Nursery for Vegetable and Flower Seeds:

The preparation of a nursery of vegetable and flower seeds is a especially, crucial step for ensuring healthy plant development. A nursery provides young plants with a protected environment before seedlings are transplanted to their final location.
Objectives of a Nursery:
• Firstly, to give seeds the best conditions for germination.
• Secondly, to raise healthy, disease-free seedlings.
• Lastly, to save space and resources in the main field.
Following are detailed explanation of how to prepare a nursery for flowers and a few vegetables.

Steps for Nursery Preparation:

1. Select a Suitable Site:

Choose a location with the following features:
• Partial shade (protects young plants from strong sun and rain).
• Good drainage (to prevent water-logging).
• Close to a water source.
• Protected from wind and animals.

2. Prepare the Nursery Bed:

a) Size of Bed:
• Usually 1 meter wide, 3–5 meters long.
• Raised about 15 cm above ground to ensure drainage.
b) Soil Preparation:
• Loosen the soil to a fine tilth using a spade or hoe.
• Remove weeds, stones, and also debris.
c) Soil Mix (for healthy seedlings):
Use a mix like:
• Garden soil: 1 part
• Fine sand: 1 part
• Well-decomposed compost or FYM (farmyard manure): 1 part
This mixture provides good aeration, drainage, and also nutrients. The mixture can also be used in plastic or clay pots.

3. Disinfection of Soil (Optional but Important):

To kill pathogens and pests:
• Solarization: Cover the bed with a clear plastic sheet for 2–3 weeks during hot weather.
• Or, treat soil with fungicide.

4. Make Sowing Lines (Furrows):

• Spacing: 5–10 cm between rows.
• Depth: 0.5–1.0 cm, depending on seed size.

5. Sowing the Seeds:

• Sow seeds thinly to avoid overcrowding.
• Cover with a thin layer of fine soil or sand.
• Lightly press the surface to generally ensure contact between the seed and soil.

6. Watering:

• Use a watering can especially with a fine nozzle.
• Keep the bed moist, neither dry nor flooded.
• Water gently but regularly.

7. Mulching (Optional):

• Use straw, dry grass, or newspaper to cover the bed.
• Helps retain moisture and also protect seeds.

8. Covering the Bed:

• Use a shade net, poly-house, or bamboo shed with a dry grass roof to prevent harsh sunlight and also protect from rain and birds.

9. Care After Germination:

• Remove mulch once seedlings emerge.
• Thin seedlings if overcrowded.
• Protect from pests (use neem spray or mild insecticide if needed).
• Harden the seedlings by exposing them gradually to sunlight before transplanting.

Vegetable and Flower Seeds’ nursery transplanting:

• Seedlings are usually ready in 3–6 weeks (also depends on the flower).
• Transplant when they have 4–6 true leaves and are 10–15 cm tall.
Example: Suitable Vegetable and Flower Seeds for Nursery Raising are Marigold, Petunia, Zinnia, Salvia, Calendula, Tomato, Chilli, Brinjal, and Onion etc.
